Why Slowing Down Feels So Uncomfortable (At First)

I used to think I wanted more time—more time to breathe, reflect, and catch up on all the things I’d been “too busy” to do. Then, the universe (with its impeccable sense of humor) handed me exactly that: time.

I lost my job, and suddenly, my calendar was wide open. No deadlines, no meetings, no structure. And instead of feeling relieved, I felt panicked.

We live in a society that glorifies hustle culture, where being busy equals being productive, and slowing down feels like falling behind. But what if taking a step back is actually the key to moving forward?

The Fear of Stillness and Why We Avoid It

When life forces us to slow down, we often scramble to fill the space. We scroll endlessly, over-plan, or obsess about what’s next. I was no exception. The moment I found myself with free time, I immediately thought: What should I be doing?

In an effort to feel “productive,” I launched into project mode—starting with a massive closet cleanout. But this wasn’t just about decluttering; I focused on the energy of each item. If something felt stagnant or heavy, I let it go, releasing it to someone who could see it as fresh and new in their life. It was as if I was clearing emotional clutter right alongside the physical stuff.

But here’s the truth: Slowing down isn’t about doing nothing—it’s about creating space to actually feel, reflect, and reset.

How to Embrace Slowing Down Without Losing Your Mind

1. Shift from Hustle Mode to Mindfulness

Instead of rushing to fill every moment, try experiencing it. Here’s what helped me:

  • Mornings without screens – Instead of diving into emails or social media, I started my day with quiet time, stretching, or journaling.

  • Intentional walks No phone, no podcast, no agenda. Just walking and noticing the world around me.

  • Breathwork and meditation  I know, I know. But trust me, even five minutes of deep breathing can rewire your stress response.

  • Nighttime rituals – Something that wasn’t possible before because I would fall into bed exhausted every night. Now, I take my time: maybe it’s lighting a candle, reflecting on the day, or enjoying a calming evening routine that soothes my mind.

2. Reframe Rest as Productive

Rest isn’t lazy; it’s necessary. Slowing down improves mental clarity, reduces stress, and boosts creativity. Some of the most successful people in the world swear by strategic rest. So if the greats are doing it, why not us?

3. Learn to Sit with Discomfort

Slowing down can bring up emotions we’ve been too busy to face. Instead of distracting yourself, sit with them. Journal, talk it out, or simply observe your feelings without judgment. Growth happens in these quiet moments.

The Hidden Gifts of Slowing Down

Here’s what I’ve discovered since embracing this unexpected pause:

  • More presence I actually see and feel my days instead of rushing through them.

  • Deeper self-awareness – I’m realizing what truly matters to me (and what doesn’t).

  • Increased creativity – Turns out, ideas flow when you’re not constantly in “go” mode.

Final Thoughts: If You’re in a Forced Pause, You’re Not Alone

If you find yourself in a season of stillness—whether due to job loss, burnout, or life simply slowing down—know this: It’s not a step backward. It’s a recalibration.

Instead of filling the space, let it breathe. Instead of panicking, lean in. Because sometimes, when we stop running, we finally see where we are. And that’s exactly where we’re meant to be..
